Levin newspaper future in doubt

The future of Levin's Daily Chronicle newspaper is in doubt, with publisher APN proposing to to replace it with a free bi-weekly community newspaper.

The newspaper, which covers Horowhenua and the northern part of the Kapiti region, has a circulation of more than 2,600

APN is blaming a downturn in advertising revenue, and says decisions on the paper's future will be confirmed on Monday.

The move has been criticised by Massey University's journalism lecturers Cathy Strong and Alan Samson, who say the demise of the daily newspaper means Horowhenua will lose the watchdog factor that a daily newspaper provides.
