Promotion of Maori culture discussed at hui

A series of hui about protecting marae heritage is also canvassing plans to better promote Maori culture to overseas visitors.

A document called Tapuwae highlights specific concerns such as dispelling the myth that Maori heritage is of value to Maori only.

The Historic Places Trust says there are more than 1000 marae in New Zealand, which many people, particularly international visitors, are unaware of.

He says activities such as whale watching also have a unique Maori story which should be told.
