Scammers pose as members of NZ crime agency

Police are warning the public after Nigerian-based scammers tried to pass themselves off as representatives of a New Zealand crime agency.

Police say the scammers targeted a woman, who has already been the victim of a scam, by pretending they were investigators from the Organised and Financial Crime Agency.

The head of the agency, Assistant Commissioner Malcolm Burgess, says the scammers asked the woman via e-mail to pay more money to help with the investigation into her case.

Mr Burgess says the woman was suspicious of the unofficial looking e-mails, which contained bad grammar and broken English, and reported them to police.

Police are not aware of anyone else being targeted by the scammers, but are encouraging people to ignore these e-mails.

Mr Burgess says no New Zealand law agency would contact people in this way and would certainly not ask for any money.
