Aucklanders voice opinion on protection of pre-1940 homes

Auckland City Council says it has received 700 submissions about demolition controls for character homes, and many of them support keeping the restrictions.

Aucklanders had until last Thursday to voice their opinion on protections for homes built before the World War II, in areas known as 'residential two'.

The homes in suburbs including Epsom, Herne Bay and St Heliers are threatened by proceedings in the environment court.

If the protections are removed, thousands of pre-1940s homes could be demolished or removed without resource consent.

City Development Committee chairman Sam Lotu-Iiga says the high level of response is an indication of how important the issue is for Aucklanders.

The committee will consider a report on the submissions this week.
