Counselling service told govt could end contract

8:37 am on 13 September 2015

A leaked report into the finances of the failed counselling service Relationships Aotearoa suggests the Government was indifferent about its future.

The country's oldest and largest counselling service closed in June.

Various financial reporting problems were identified in the report, which was prepared by the consultancy PwC for the board of Relationships Aotearoa at the start of this year.

It advised the agency to increase its revenue, but warned that its biggest funder, the Social Development Ministry, was unlikely to increase its hourly rate.

PwC said it understood the ministry was already looking to reduce the number of contracts it had with counselling providers, and warned the board that Relationships Aotearoa's inability to deliver at the standing rate could be used as a reason for ending the contract.
