Police in Waikato have begun a homicide inquiry following the discovery of a body on the banks of the Waikato River.

The body was found near a jetty just below the Waikato Museum in Hamilton shortly after 10.30am on Thursday.

The police say the body appears to have been in the water for several days and it's expected to be some time before a formal identification can be made.

Meanwhile, the body of Deon Cowdrey, 21, who fell from a central Hamilton bridge just over 10 days ago still has not been found and he is believed to have drowned.
