Value for money urged for future water systems in Auckland

Water agencies say the new Auckland super-city needs a rigorous performance review of its water business to ensure value for money is obtained.

Water New Zealand, which represents territorial authorities, regional councils, engineers and suppliers has appeared before a select committee considering Auckland's Super City legislation, which will merge the region into one council.

Under the current legislation, the plan is to combine Auckland's water wholesaler, Watercare, and retailers, such as councils, into one organisation.

Water NZ chief executive Murray Gibb says the organisation would like to see a more independent scope of service levels and performance targets.
