Teacher admits indecent acts with student

An Auckland school teacher has changed his plea at the High Court in Auckland and admitted indecent acts with a pupil.

The trial for Nicholas Baldwin, 62, started at the High Court in Auckland on Monday, with his lawyer saying his client strenuously denied the charges he faced.

But in an unexpected turn of events on Tuesday, Baldwin pleaded guilty to eight counts, comprising six of indecent acts on the boy and two of sexual violation.

The Crown said one charge of sexual grooming was dropped because it was implicit in the other charges that sexual grooming did happen.

At the start of the case the court heard the boy was aged between 10 and 13 when the abuse occurred.

The name of the school Baldwin worked at is suppressed.

He will be sentenced on 20 April.
