Subivisions block surfers

Surfers in Taranaki are worried that coastal subdivisions are blocking access to surf beaches.

For decades, access has been permitted by farmers.

But the coastal property boom has seen many farmers subdividing seaside paddocks for new homes.

Surf TaranakI says two prime surfing spots near Opunake are now blocked off after Maori landowners next to five new sections, fenced off their land.

Executive officer Craig Williamson says other surf beaches around the coast have also suffered from subdivision.

He says some paper roads have been traded for poorer access or built on illegally.

Mr Williamson says the South Taranaki District Council should secure public access to the coast before approving subdivision.
