A Pacific Island Health strategy launched on Friday is to be promoted by churches.
The strategy aims to improve the health of Pacific Islanders, beginning in areas such as breast cancer screening, diabetes and smoking.
Reverend Epeli Taungapeau says the church has a moral obligation to back the strategy, as it has an obligation to help keep people well, in body and soul.
Ministry of Health Pacific Advisor Api Talemaitonga says a broader understanding of the issues affecting Pacific people is critical especially among mainstream providers.
Pacific Island Affairs Minister Georgina Te Heu Heu says without good health the Pacific population will keep lagging behind in education, work and economic performance.
