Central city Maori restaurant to close

8:59 am on 25 August 2008

A restaurant which has bought flavour of the marae to central Wellington is to close.

Waatea News reports restaurateur Bill Hamilton is shutting the doors of "Kai in the City" on Wednesday after three years of serving gourmet boil up, high-class hangi and piripiri-rubbed steak.

He says it was food he was brought-up on as a kid. The menu included wild pork, whitebait and mutton bird.

Mr Hamilton says he's proved it's possible to make a Maori-themed restaurant a success, but his day job and his tribal work mean he does not have the time to devote to the business.
