Jimmy Barnes plays for RNZ

Rock icon Jimmy Barnes headed into RNZ's Auckland studio for a live performance on Afternoons with Jesse Mulligan today.

Cold Chisel have a new album out The Perfect Crime and will play two New Zealand shows later in the year, Christchurch Horncastle Arena on 4 December and Villa Maria Estate Winery, Mangere, 6 December.

Barnes found fame in the 70s and 80s as the frontman of rock band Cold Chisel and he was joined in the studio by another Cold Chisel founding member - guitarist, Ian Moss.

The band has been active for over 40 years, and is best-known for hits Cheap Wine, Choir Girl and Khe Sanh.

The band's peak years were 1978 to 1982 during which time it released its eponymous debut Cold Chisel, Breakfast at Sweethearts, East Swingshift and Circus Animals.

Barnes launched his solo career in 1984 which produced nine Australian No 1 albums and an array of hit singles. He has recorded with INXS, Tina Turner, Joe Cocker, John Farnham and a long list of other Australian and international artists.

Cold Chisel and Barnes remain radio airplay staples in Australia and New Zealand.
