Government's internet porn filter operating

3:47 pm on 15 March 2010

Two small Internet Service Providers have become the first to operate a government internet filter introduced to block child pornography.

The providers, Maxnet and Watchdog, are using the Digital Child Exploitation System which prevents access to websites carrying images of child sex abuse.

Department of Internal Affairsdeputy secretary Keith Manch says it has had a good level of interest from other ISPs in the filter.

Mr Manch says the filter will not effect internet speed or stability.

Internet freedom lobby group Tech Liberty complains that the filter sets a precedent of government censorship online.
