Korean man's bail application dismissed

8:23 pm on 17 December 2015

A bail application by a Korean man fighting extradition to China on murder charges has been dismissed by the High Court.

Kyung Yup Kim is wanted in China in relation to the death of a woman in Shanghai in 2009.

The permanent New Zealand resident has been in prison here since 2011.

Yesterday his lawyer Tony Ellis appealed in the High Court in Wellington for Mr Kim's release on bail with electronic monitoring.

He also filed for a judicial review of the Justice Minister Amy Adams' decision to extradite Mr Kim.

Mr Ellis told Justice Collins there was no risk of Mr Kim fleeing the country because he had no money and his family was here.

However, Justice Collins has decided there was a risk.
