Wellington and Christchurch woke up to the best Christmas weather in the country this morning.

MetService said the rest of New Zealand had a cloudy start.

"Certain places, for example Wellington and Christchurch this morning were very nice, Auckland not the greatest of starts with drizzly, cloudy conditions, but it is going to be an improving trend for most places for the whole day", said MetService forecaster, Karl Loots.

Churton Park in Wellington was expected to take out the days highest temperature, with MetService predicting the mercury to hit 31°C.

Mid Dome, east of Te Anau in the South Island was not so lucky, with the lowest temperature of just 8°C.

Boxing Day is also shaping up to be a mild day for most of the country, MetService said a high pressure system would dominate over the country and only one or two places might have light showers.
