Sea rescue exercise in Wellington harbour

11:50 am on 13 September 2008

A search and rescue exercise, described by organisers as one of the largest in a decade, took place in Wellington harbour on Saturday.

The exercise involved a Strait Shipping passenger ferry, police and coastguard search and rescue vessels, and helicopters.

Maritime New Zealand spokesperson Sophie Hazelhurst said a large scale exercise is needed to ensure emergency responses are well co-ordinated.

She said systems are already regularly tested in smaller search and rescue exercises.
