NZ's longest ocean outfall opened

An $87 million pipeline taking wastewater from Christchurch out to sea has been opened after three and a half years of construction.

It's the longest ocean outfall in New Zealand, and will take the treated wastewater out to Pegasus Bay, rather than into the Avon-Heathcote Estuary.

Christchurch city council water and waste manager Mark Christison says it will improve the quality of water in the estuary.

He hopes the marine life there will increase and some sea weeds will gradually disappear.

Mr Christison says the outfall will not affect people swimming or gathering shellfish from the ocean.
