A person has died after being hit by a train near Christchurch.
Police say the pedestrian was hit by a goods train near Rolleston shortly after 8am on Friday.
KiwiRail public affairs manager Kevin Ramshaw says the driver is shaken up by the experience.
"In these circumstances the loco engineers are stood down and offered counselling, and he'll go through that process."
Kevin Ramshaw says the TranzAlpine daily passenger train that travels to Greymouth from Christchurch has been cancelled and buses offered to the passengers travelling to the West Coast.
