Deputy Prime Minister Bill English formally opened the Cashin Quay 2 Wharf this afternoon, which is expected to increase the port's ability to grow trade in coming decades.

Imports and exports coming though Lyttelton Port accounted for 56 percent of the total volume coming into the South Island, Mr English said.

The port serviced more than 400 container ships in the past year, and the redevelopment doubles its container capacity.

The new section of Cashin Quay replaces the wharf destroyed in the 2011 earthquake.
