Fire crews in Christchurch are damping down a large fire at a paper recycling plant.

Three fire appliances and a dozen staff are fighting the fire, which broke out in a five metre pile of paper bales at the Sockburn plant just after 9am on Wednesday.

Chief Fire Officer Dan Coward says crews are removing the smouldering bales one by one to get to the seat of the fire.

The fire is not threatening any property.
