A man is in a critical condition in Wanganui Hospital following an attack in the city.
Police say the man, 28, was seriously injured in the incident, which occurred in Cross Street shortly after 10pm on Tuesday.
A team of 15 officers, assisted by forensic scientists from Auckland and Wellington are examining the scene and speaking with the man's family and witnesses.
It was earlier reported that a person had been injured in a baseball bat attack.
However, Detective Inspector Sue Schwalger says they have little idea at this stage, of what happened to the victim and they would like to hear from anyone who was in the Cross Street area at the time.
