Two companies have lost their appeals against fines imposed for their part in the the Tamahere coolstore explosion.

The explosion in April 2008 killed a firefighter and seriously injured seven others at the coolstore south of Hamilton.

Hamilton District Court fined the owner of the facility, Icepak Coolstores (now known as Waikato Coldstorage Ltd) $37,000 last year.

Mobile Refrigeration Specialists, which installed the refrigeration equipment at the centre of the explosion, was fined $56,000.

The companies challenged the fines, saying the judge had not taken into account their ability to pay them.

The High Court has ruled the sentences were not excessive.
