A 53-year-old woman was found dead at her house on Coast Road at the village 30 kilometres north of Dunedin this morning, near to where police earlier found a critically injured man.

Armed police cordoned off the village of Seacliff after finding the 59-year-old man seriously injured in Truby King Reserve.

Police found a firearm in the reserve.

RNZ News understands they were neighbours and that the man lived in a house-bus on his property.

Police will not confirm reports the man and woman had been in some kind of dispute.

Locals told RNZ News they were shocked that a shooting would happen in their normally peaceful township.

The man lived in a house-bus, and the woman was his neighbour, but they did not see much of either of them, locals said.

A section of Coast Road remains closed as police examine the scene.

Police, Fire Service, St John ambulance and the Otago rescue helicopter responded to the incident.

St John Ambulance said the male patient was transported in a very serious condition to Dunedin Hospital by helicopter.
