Girl's death prompts lower speed limit outside college

The speed limit is to be lowered outside Mt Maunganui College, where a girl was killed by a logging truck in June.

Tauranga City Council has decided that the speed limit along Maunganui Road will drop from 70km/h to 50km/h from November.

Breeze Brunton, 13, stepped into the path of the truck as she went to cross the road. The driver was not prosecuted.

Police and the New Zealand Transport Agency opposed the bylaw change, saying the lower speed would be inappropriate for such wide lanes.

Planned engineering works will include the removal of some parking spaces and a new lane layout.
