11:28 pm on 5 April 2010

Two men drowned in separate accidents in the South Island on Monday.

Police say a Korean man, 51, was preparing to fish off the rocks below the Cape Saunders lighthouse soon after 11am when a large wave swept him into the water.

They say the area is a popular fishing spot, but is known for freak waves.

A helicopter and two boats joined the search and his body was found at about midday.

A Brazilian man, 22, drowned in Lake Hood, near Ashburton, on Monday evening.

Police say the man is a Brazilian who had been living in Ashburton, and relatives overseas had not yet been told of his death.

They say they are still trying to work out what happened, but alcohol was not involved.

The lake was calm and it is believed the man was a strong swimmer.
