Gang expert and award-winning author Jarrod Gilbert has been badly injured in a motorcycle crash during an organised ride in the South Island.

He was among a group of about 100 riders following a course through Selwyn District on Saturday as part of a Dice Run, in which riders roll dice for points at various stops.

Speaking to RNZ News from Christchurch Hospital, Dr Gilbert said he has no memory of the crash but he had been having bad luck with the dice before that.

He had been told he was rear-ended by another rider, who was uninjured.

Dr Gilbert hoped to have surgery tomorrow for his injuries, which include a split liver, broken arm, leg and ribs.
