Auckland Transport says a train broke down between Newmarket and the downtown hub, Britomart, just after 7am.

Commuters on the affected train were left stranded for about an hour.

Other passengers on the Western Line were transferred to buses at Newmarket while other lines were delayed.

The service was operating again just after 8am, but trains into Britomart are still delayed by up to 15 minutes.

Auckland Transport spokesman Mark Hannan said the cause of the fault was being investigated.

The line carries about 10,000 people every hour.
