Record submissions to recognise Milton church

A proposal to register a church in Milton as an historic place has prompted a record number of submissions to the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

The Tokomairiro Presbyterian Church is a large stone building with a spire, designed by celebrated architect R.A. Lawson, and built about 120 years ago.

The Historic Places Trust says 450 submissions have been received. All but one of the submissions request that the church be recognised.

Otago Southland manager, Owen Graham says the most submissions received previously by the trust was about 100.

He says a final decision on the church's status is likely to be made in December.
