Glass importer stops operating after worker's death

3:46 pm on 7 April 2010

A glass importer where a man was fatally cut by falling glass has stopped operating while an investigation takes place.

Police say the 42-year-old man died on Tuesday night after sheets of glass crashed down on him while he was unloading a shipping container at Sharpeye Glass Ltd on Auckland's North Shore.

Two of colleagues suffered minor injuries when they went to help him.

The Department of Labour is investigating the incident.

It is the second death in the glass industry in recent months. In November, a man died when he was crushed by a crate of glass in Wairarapa.

The Glass Association says companies must ensure that staff follow safety protocols when working with glass.
