5:57 pm on 13 October 2008

Police say alcohol may have been a factor in a stabbing that's left a man in a serious condition in Invercargill Hospital.

A 26-year-old man from Timaru remains in a critical condition in hospital after being knifed in the back at the Marist Rugby Club rooms on Miller Street.

The incident happened at a 21st birthday party just before 2am on Sunday.

Police say they were confronted by a group of people who'd been drinking when they attended the incident.

Police say a fight broke out which ended with one man receiving five stab wounds to his chest and torso.

They are looking for two men who ran from the scene before police arrived.
