Fluoro safety vests for young children

Primary school children in Queenstown are to be outfitted with fluoro safety vests in an effort to ensure nothing untoward happens to them while en route to and from school.

Some 3000 fluoro safety vests have been purchased by Rotary.

It is the kind of clothing more common on a building site but Rotary member Chris Campbell, who came up with the idea, says it makes sense for children too.

Rotary will seek to raise $20,000 for the vests as part of a charity fundraiser in conjunction with next month's Melbourne Cup.

Five schools in the area are to take part next year.

Queenstown Primary School principal John Western says it will not be mandatory for children to wear the vests - but the school will run a safety campaign to highlight the dangers and then leave it up to the individual to choose.
