Man arrested after jogger 'viciously' assaulted

8:00 am on 30 April 2016

A Whangarei woman is in a serious condition in hospital after being abducted while jogging and violently assaulted.

The woman, who is in her early 20s, was jogging in Whangarei early yesterday morning when she was attacked and dragged to a vehicle, taken to a house and "viciously" assaulted, the police said.

She was then driven to central Whangarei and left on the street.

Police have arrested a 40-year-old man who will appear in court today charged with abduction, sexual violation and wounding with intent to injure.

Inspector Justin Rogers said the community would be shocked and angered by the incident, but police were not looking for anyone else.

He said police would like to hear from anyone who might have seen a Blue Nissan Serena people-mover with tinted windows and silver trim, in the area around the Hatea Loop, in the days leading up to the attack.
