The search for a missing tetraplegic man in Hamilton is being stepped up, with the police dive squad being drafted in.

Police say they hold grave fears for the safety of Paul Fraser, 53, who was last seen in the central city on Tuesday morning.

Mr Fraser has no mobility and controls his wheelchair with head movements.

Police say Mr Fraser was last seen travelling north on the western side of Victoria Street at 10.45am and believe he may have taken a river walkway while heading toward the suburb of St Andrews.

Police have been viewing CCTV footage to help trace the man's movements and are asking for any sightings of him.

Members of the Wellington-based dive squad will search the Waikato River on Thursday morning.
