Orewa plans artificial reef to protect beach

A seaside town north of Auckland wants an artificial reef built to protect its beach.

The multimillion-dollar project is aimed at protecting Orewa beach from storms and improving its use for sunbathers, surfers and other watersports enthusiasts.

Rodney District Councillor Zane Taylor is behind the project, which he says will have benefits for marine life.

Supporters say the reef is needed to reduce coastal erosion, avoid costly sand replenishment and make the beach more attractive. They also say it will provide better conditions for surfers.

Mr Taylor says the four submerged reefs will cost about $5-6 million, which will be largely funded by the community.

The plans have been submitted to the Auckland Regional Council for resource consent and the project could start by mid-2009.
