More than 8000 Auckland local body workers will find out on Tuesday whether their jobs are secure in the merger of eight councils into a a single super-council.
Almost 3500 workers will be told their jobs are safe, but uncertainty remains for thousands more employed in the country's biggest-ever local government amalgamation.
Staff will receive one of three letters; one confirms a job won't change, another, to around 120 managers, says their jobs will disappear.
A further 650 workers are on short term contracts, which expire when the new super-council comes into being.
Another 4000 staff will still face uncertainty but the Auckland Transition Agency, which is designing the regionwide Auckland Council, hopes many of them can be told within a month whether their jobs are safe.
Operational jobs are the safest, with senior management the least safe.
The design of the council and its major agencies is due to be finished by the end of August, with the new body coming into being at the start of November.
