Firefighters battle Rakaia Gorge blaze

About two dozen firefighters have contained a big scrub fire on the south bank of the Rakaia Gorge.

The Fire Service in Canterbury says strong winds are fanning the blaze, which covers an area of about 100 metres by 200 metres on the Arundel/Rakaia Gorge road. No buildings have been damaged.

The Fire Service says four fire engines, four tankers and a helicopter are at the fire.

It up to 15 staff will remain at the scene dampening down the affected area.
