Police to review cold case murder

4:43 pm on 24 May 2016

Police are reviewing their handling of a cold case murder after a man was convicted of unrelated sex charges during their investigation.

Katrina Jefferies was found dead at Waikowhai Reserve in Hillsborough in July 2005.

Police interviewed 750 witnesses but never charged anyone for her murder.

Michael Te Arawaka Te Huia was arrested in 2014 as part of the investigation and was found guilty of multiple counts of rape and assault unrelated to Ms Jefferies.

Last week, he was sentenced to 19 years in prison.

Investigations manager, Detective Inspector Kevin Hooper, said police will shortly begin an internal peer review into the murder inquiry following new information.
