Potential seen for Muslim tourism in NZ

Muslims want popular tourist spots in New Zealand to be made Muslim friendly.

The Federation of Muslim Associations says more than 20,000 tourists came to this country last year from Malaysia, Indonesia and the Middle East and there is a potential for this market to grow.

But federation president Anwar Ghani says there are not enough halal restaurants and the organisation needs to work with Tourism New Zealand to fix this.

The Inbound Tour Operators Council says operators are already tapping into the Muslim market, but they need to be educated about the culture if the market is to grow.
