DoC to install solar power heaters on remote huts

3:34 pm on 16 April 2010

The Department of Conservation plans to save money by using solar power to heat water at remote tramping huts, instead of using LPG delivered by helicopter.

Solar hot water heaters will be installed on the roofs of five huts for trampers and eight quarters for wardens in the South Island.

DoC says three companies will supply the huts with the solar systems.

It estimates the work will cost up to $10,000 and save about $2000 per year on helicopter flights to each site.
