A large amount of cash has been handed in to police by a woman who found it lying in the street in Auckland.

The police said the amount was many thousands of dollars.

The acting area commander, Grant Tetzlaff, said the woman found the money in Mt Eden Village on Saturday afternoon, just lying on the ground.

"She's picked up the money and had a bit of a look around Mt Eden shops, trying to find an owner for the money.

"She hasn't been able to find that person so she's done the right thing and brought it into the Balmoral police station.

"We're looking to identify whoever's lost a large amount of money."

Mr Tetzlaff said the owner had 90 days to claim the cash before it was handed back to the finder.
