Firefighters have managed to contain a fire after an explosion in a garage in the Auckland suburb of Pakuranga.

Fire Service spokesman Jarron Philips said seven fire engines were called to Latham Avenue after dozens of people reported hearing explosions.

Mr Philips said the fast-moving fire gutted a garage and threatened two adjoining units, but was now under control.

One person was being treated by ambulance staff for smoke inhalation, he said.

It was not clear what caused the explosion and blaze but fire investigators were on their way to the scene, he said.

Julie Richardson-Smith, who lives on a neighbouring street, said earlier she could see flames springing up several metres into the air.

Ms Richardson-Smith said she was on her way back to Pakuranga when the actual explosion happened, but she could still hear popping noises and small explosions coming from the property.
