Police in Nelson are still trying to identify a person or persons who caused skull and brain damage to a four-month-old baby boy.

The infant remains on a life support system in Auckland's Starship hospital, although his condition has stabilised.

Police say up to 10 people, including the boy's parents, were at the Motueka house at various times over Labour weekend when the boy's skull was fractured.

Detective Sergeant Kevin Tiernan says one of those people caused the injury.

Mr Tiernan says one or two people have yet to be interviewed and police may then have to re-interview others.
