A 22-year-old man underwent surgery overnight after being stabbed in the stomach on Mathews Avenue around 2.15pm.

Police said the offender was reportedly trying to break into a vehicle before members of the public intervened.

He then went to Mathews Avenue, where he ran through a number of properties and knocked on doors before being approached by the victim.

"It does not appear that the victim and offender are known to each other," a police spokesperson said.

He remains in Whangarei Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

A scene examination is under way and police have recovered what they believe to be the knife that was used.

Police have released a picture of a man who they believe may be able to help with their enquiries.

Anyone with information about the man, or who witnessed suspicious behaviour in Kaitaia, is being asked to get in touch.
