Scott Kuggeleijn was accused of raping a 21-year-old woman in May last year.

The trial started at the beginning of last week in the Hamilton District Court.

The jury retired at 11.30am yesterday and just after 2pm today returned to court to tell the judge they would not be able to reach a unanimous or majority verdict.

Judge Philip Connell dismissed the jury and thanked them for their service.

Judge Connell told Mr Kuggeleijn the outcome was an unfortunate conclusion to the trial for him.

Mr Kuggeleijn has been remanded on bail until next month when a retrial date will be set.
