Hamilton standoff ends peacefully with arrest

Police have arrested a man after a standoff that lasted about 13 hours in Hamilton.

Police and the Armed Offenders Squad (AOS) had been negotiating with a man who was holed-up inside a house in the suburb of Glenview on Friday.

Police said they went to the house on Macdonald Road in Glenview to make an arrest, but after an exchange, officers retreated and called in back-up, and the area was cordoned off.

They said they entered the house and arrested the man shortly before 11pm, and that a woman who was also at the property has been removed safely.

She is speaking with officers.

About 30 children at a nearby kindergarten inside the cordon were required to spend the day indoors.

Glenview Kindergarten manager Sandra Paymani said the children had all coped well with the situation.

They were released late in the afternoon, and the remaining cordon has now been lifted so that residents can return to their homes.

The man will appear in the Hamilton District Court today.
