Three men armed with a rifle, hammer and bat threatened a staff member at a Christchurch bakery in the early hours of this morning.

The men entered Buns Bakery on Ferry Road in Phillipstown about 3am, police said.

Police said the man with the rifle told a staff member to get down while the other men tried to open the till and a cupboard with cigarettes.

The staff member was not injured, but was very shaken.

It is not yet known if anything was stolen.

The men are described as tall, Māori, wearing hoodies and balaclavas.
