Worries about impact of Auckland 'party central'

11:50 am on 22 April 2010

Some business groups in Auckland fear a $23 million Rugby World Cup zone for supporters on Queens Wharf will draw their customers away.

The venue will apply for a liquor licence and be able to accommodate thousands of visitors at a time.

The Hospitality Association says Auckland bars and restaurants are capable of looking after all the Rugby World Cup visitors to Auckland.

The Newmarket Business Association says the Government and councils are too focussed on central Auckland in their thinking.

However, Auckland Chamber of Commerce says "party central" should be licenced.

It says there could be 85,000 visitors to Auckland because of the World Cup - a large enough number to be shared between the fan zones and other businesses.
