A person has died in a boating accident in Northland.
A small run-about capsized near Opua in the Bay of Islands at about 2pm on Sunday throwing three occupants into the water.
Police say two people managed to swim to shore and raised the alarm, prompting a search and rescue operation.
The survivors then went back out onto the water with locals and found their dead companion shortly afterwards.
The victim's next of kin are yet to be advised and the matter has been referred to the Coroner.
