A man who fatally stabbed a teenager in suburban Lower Hutt in April has pleaded guilty to a charge of murder.

Paul Keith Skipper, 40, appeared in the High Court in Wellington before Justice Joseph Williams.

His 17-year-old victim, Te Awhiahua Toko, suffered three stab wounds in an attack in her home and died two days later in Wellington Hospital.

Many members of her family were at today's hearing, including some wearing T-shirts featuring her image.

Justice Williams issued Skipper with a warning under the three strikes legislation and ordered a psychiatric report to be prepared before sentencing.

Skipper was remanded in custody and will be sentenced later in the year.
