10:39 am on 23 August 2016

Police have laid multiple drink driving charges against a man over a crash in Dargaville which killed three people.

Susanna and Sadie Stewart, and James Wearmouth, were among eight people travelling in the ute heading home along Baylys Coast Road in Dargaville in early June.

All three died when the ute crashed on a corner. Police at the time said it was a "highly preventable accident".

Northland police said the ute had been seen driving dangerously on Baylys Beach minutes before the crash.

The ute's 49-year-old driver is facing seven charges of driving under the influence of alcohol causing death or injury, and one charge of failing to remain at an accident.
